There is now another matter that needs resolving in the lives of many believers. Much of it comes from old habits. Before we consider what it is, let us remember all we’ve been learning about the power of God’s grace. There is no habit brought over from our old way of living that has more power than the grace of God that is making us into new persons. Let’s get this understanding settled in our hearts and minds. Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature (“there is a new creation”): old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new—II Corinthians 5:17.
What we are ready to consider in the unfolding revelation of Ephesians has to do with our speech. See this: Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers—Ephesians 4:29. To get a good understanding in this verse, let us see what the word corrupt means. It is from the Greek saproś which means “rotten, putrid, depraved, impure, of a bad quality.” It’s stuff that’s just plain nasty. Some people, even believers, are in such habit of talking this way that even their breath smells foul. The grace of God is ready to remove this!
The Holy Spirit will give us a way of speech that will cause other people to want the same Jesus we know. The word edifying in the above verse means “building up.” Nothing builds up another person like words of grace.
FATHER, I’m sorry for the way I’ve talked. I want my mouth to speak words that minister grace to those who hear me. From what Jesus taught in the above Scripture, I see it must begin in my heart. So, please send Your Spirit through all the avenues of my heart. Set me free from spiritual uncleanness, so none of it will ever again come from me. Work Your Truth into me so that what I speak will come forth to edify those who hear me.
